THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE ON PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AND HOW BEING INJURED CAN HINDER THES

Introduction

It goes without saying that nearly all forms of physical exercise are going to provide at least one benefit to our body, both physically & mentally. With that said, without participating in exercise regularly there is a chance you are more predisposed to health & mental health issues.

The benefits of exercise on psychological factors

  1. Physical activity releases feel-good hormones such as ‘serotonin’ that makes you feel better in yourself and gives you more energy.

  2. Exercise helps to manage stress, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts due to the release of cortisol.

  3. Activities that focus the brain onto something enables you to train it to adopt effective coping mechanisms.

  4. Improved sleep is great for the mind to recover and therefore, participating in exercise creates more tiredness so sleep is of better quality.

  5. More activity can increase one’s self-esteem which naturally improves mental health.

  6. Studies suggest that exercise can facilitate in the reduction of depression.

  7. If done in a group setting, exercise can open doors to new friendships.

The benefits of exercise on physical factors

  1. Exercise can combat health conditions and disease. Things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and arthritis etc can, within reason, be managed with exercise.

  2. Controlling weight through participation in activity is a healthy approach. Any form of moving your body is a great way to maintain the weight that best suits you.

  3. Improved strength and energy capacities can enable you to have a better quality of life.

  4. We only have one Musculo-skeletal system… It’s important we look after it! Building and maintaining strong muscle and bones can reduce the risk of injury or age-related bone/muscle conditions.

  5. Your skin can be affected by a lack of exercise. This is due to oxidative stress whereby the antioxidant defences cannot completely repair the cell damage.

  6. Chronic pain can be debilitating, but exercise can help to reduce this!

Being injured can really take its toll on the body. Both physical and psychological factors are affected when an injury occurs and can subsequently have a knock on effect and spark the beginning of some, if not all, of the above factors.
